The Confederate Memorial at Gamble Plantation Historic State Park, also known as the Gamble Mansion or Gamble Plantation, is a Florida State Park located on 37th Avenue East and US 301 in Ellenton, Florida. The Florida Division United Daughters of the Confederacy call it home.
Welcome to the Confederate Memorial of Judah P. Benjamin at Gamble Plantation Historic State Park. Major Robert Gamble lived at this antebellum mansion, which served as the headquarters of a large sugar plantation. It is South Florida's only remaining plantation mansion.
He enslaved 62 persons in total. He quickly expanded his holdings from 160 acres to 3,500 acres. He oversaw the construction of various structures and slave quarters (all of which were made of tabby), as well as the wharf from which sugar and molasses were shipped by schooner and steamboat.
The mansion, which was erected in 1844, has barely survived wars, hurricanes, and tropical humidity. It sat empty and deteriorating in the 1920s after being used to store fertilizer. The United Daughters of the Confederacy stepped in to save the property, acquiring it and deeding it to the state.
